What General Electrical Maintenance Covers
This page is for smaller electrical works, repairs, alterations and upgrades where suitable and subject to assessment. Examples include additional sockets, replacement sockets and switches, lighting alterations, replacement light fittings, external lights, bathroom extractor fans, appliance connection points, cooker or hob connection support where suitable, garage sockets, small power alterations, minor landlord or tenant repair works, damaged accessories, loose or faulty switches or sockets, tripping or failed accessories where not a full fault-finding visit, small containment or trunking alterations, replacement pull cords and small remedial items following reports or inspections.
How VLV Handles Small Electrical Works
VLV will often ask for photos or a short video before quoting or booking small works. Clear photos help confirm the accessory type, location, access, existing condition and likely materials. Some small works can be quoted from photos, but others may need an inspection or attendance first. If the job changes once on site, VLV will explain the issue and agree the next step before carrying out additional works where practical. If extra materials or further remedial work are required, a revised quote or separate quote may be needed.
Small Works Still Need to Be Done Properly
Even small electrical alterations need to be carried out safely. Safe isolation, suitable materials, correct connections and testing remain important. Minor works certification or other documentation may be provided where required depending on the work completed. Not every small attendance results in the same certificate type, and final documentation depends on the agreed scope and current requirements. Works are carried out with reference to the current edition of BS 7671, Building Regulations Part P where applicable, manufacturer instructions and relevant guidance where applicable.
When Maintenance Becomes Remedial Work
Some reported small jobs reveal wider issues, such as damaged wiring, poor previous alterations, unsuitable accessories, loose terminations, overheating, missing RCD protection, poor containment, water ingress or unsafe circuits. Where a wider issue is found, VLV may need to quote separately for remedial works, subject to inspection and testing and subject to client approval. If the issue is dangerous, the affected circuit or equipment may be left isolated where safe to do so until remedial works are approved and completed.
Safety note
If there is burning, smoke, exposed live parts, overheating, water ingress into electrical equipment or repeated tripping, the affected circuit or equipment should not be used. Isolate the affected circuit if it is safe to do so and contact a competent electrician.
