Not just a cable to the shed
Garden and outbuilding supplies can support useful spaces such as offices, workshops, garages and studios, but the design needs to reflect how the space will actually be used. Electric heating, tools, office equipment, lighting, outdoor sockets, unattended equipment, external cable routes, trenching and future expansion can all affect the final design.
Route, load and protection
VLV can review cable route, distance, ground surface, trenching and reinstatement requirements, consumer unit suitability, earthing considerations, RCBO/RCD protection, SPD, SWA or suitable mechanical protection where applicable, IP-rated accessories, outdoor isolation and whether a small local distribution board is suitable.
AFDDs, Timber Structures and Fire-Risk Considerations
Garden rooms, sheds, workshops, timber outbuildings and similar structures can require additional fire-risk consideration. AFDD protection may need to be considered or specified where required or appropriate under the current edition of BS 7671. AFDDs may be relevant where circuits supply socket-outlets or fixed equipment in locations or structures where fire risk, construction type or usage needs additional consideration. Timber construction, combustible materials, hidden cable routes, heating loads, tools, office equipment and unattended equipment can all affect the design approach. Final design depends on the structure, intended use, circuit type, load, cable route, protective devices, installation method and risk assessment. VLV will assess whether AFDD, RCBO/RCD protection, SPD, cable mechanical protection, IP-rated accessories, earthing arrangements and local isolation are required or appropriate.
Future outdoor and energy plans
Where relevant, VLV can consider future garden office expansion, garage use, external lighting, EV-related provision, solar or battery readiness and other outdoor electrical plans so the first stage is not under-specified.
Start this garden or outbuilding enquiry
For a garden power or outbuilding supply enquiry, send the type of outbuilding, approximate distance from the house, intended use, expected loads, heating, tools or office equipment, route photos, ground surface, trenching or reinstatement needs, existing consumer unit photo, timber construction or fire-risk considerations and future expansion plans. AFDD, RCBO/RCD protection, SPD, IP rating, mechanical protection and isolation are assessed where required or appropriate.
