Fault finding

Electrical fault finding for tripping, power loss and unsafe symptoms

Fault-finding enquiries reviewed around symptoms, affected circuits, recent changes, safety concerns and the testing required to identify a practical next step.

Service overview

Electrical faults need careful investigation. VLV Electrical Ltd can review fault symptoms, affected areas, consumer unit behaviour, recent changes and safety concerns before advising on a suitable fault-finding route. Fault investigation may require testing and may lead to a separate remedial quotation depending on what is found.

Technical and compliance considerations

  • Fault finding should be carried out by competent persons using suitable inspection and testing methods.
  • The current edition of BS 7671 and manufacturer instructions may be relevant depending on the fault and remedial work.
  • Unsafe symptoms should be treated cautiously and may require isolation or urgent attendance depending on circumstances.
  • Fault investigation can reveal additional defects or remedial requirements.
  • Customer-facing content must not provide DIY repair steps.

Common fault symptoms

Common enquiries include tripping circuits, RCD or RCBO trips, loss of power, lighting faults, socket faults, burning smells, water ingress, external lighting faults, damaged accessories, loose connections and suspected insulation resistance issues.

Safety warning

If there is burning, smoke, exposed live parts, overheating, water ingress into electrical equipment or repeated tripping, the affected circuit should not be used. Isolate the affected circuit if it is safe to do so and contact a competent electrician.

Fault Finding Charges and How Visits Are Handled

Electrical fault finding is charged with a minimum attendance of 1 hour's labour. The fault is not guaranteed to be found or resolved within the first hour. If further investigation is required after the first hour, time is charged in half-hour increments at VLV Electrical Ltd's standard applicable rate. Simple faults may be repaired during the same visit where the fault is identified, the repair is straightforward, suitable materials are available from van stock, and the work can be completed safely within the agreed attendance time. If the fault requires additional materials, more involved remedial work, further access, or a larger repair, VLV may provide a separate quotation. If the fault is dangerous or presents an immediate safety concern, the affected circuit or equipment may be left safely isolated until quoted remedial works are approved and completed. Where applicable, and where engineer availability, materials, access and customer approval allow, remedial works may be completed during the same visit once the quotation is accepted. Any further works remain subject to assessment, safe working conditions, material availability and VLV Electrical Ltd approval.

Testing and remedial follow-up

Fault finding may involve inspection and testing to identify likely causes. Any repair or upgrade depends on the issue found, access, parts, circuit condition and whether further remedial work is needed.

FAQs

These answers are practical guidance only. Final scope, compliance wording and pricing must be reviewed by VLV Electrical Ltd.

Can VLV tell the fault from a message?

Symptoms help, but electrical faults often require inspection and testing before the cause and repair scope can be confirmed.

What should I do if there is burning or smoke?

Isolate the affected circuit if safe to do so and seek urgent assistance. Do not continue using equipment that appears overheated or damaged.

Can a tripping circuit be caused by an appliance?

It can be, but wiring, accessories, moisture, protective devices and other issues may also be involved. Testing may be required.

Will fault finding include repairs?

Some issues may be resolved during investigation, but others may require parts, further testing or a separate remedial quote.

Can landlords or agents report faults for tenants?

Yes, where authorised. Access details, symptoms, tenant availability and photos are useful before attendance.
